There are many continuous threats against our world. Some have existed for many years, while others are newly produced and increasing with rapidity. Two of these speeding problems are decreases in biodiversity and cultural diversity. Biodiversity is the makeup of all living things- their genes, species, and ecosystems- and how they interact. Cultural diversity is similar, only of course has to deal with human culture. The threats against them have similar effects. Both have risks for extinction and are threatened by human interactions.
For example, components of biodiversity, such as organisms and ecosystems, are at risk of extinction. The same can be said for aspects of cultural diversity, like the extinction of languages, cultural practices, or ethnic groups as whole. Both are also at threat from human interaction. Cultural diversity is threatened by following the status quo of popular culture and having no reinforcing education or awareness of culture. In turn, biodiversity is threatened by pollution, deforestation, and urbanization. The government does have some responsibility to protect biodiversity and cultural diversity. Protective measures like national parks, cultural centers, and awareness of these resources should be supported by the government. Additional funding and awareness can be done by citizens.
While it may be considered a waste of money and time to protect biodiversity and cultural diversity, the lack of this protection will lead to an eroding world that is limited in resources and with no unique qualities or traditions. History will become trite and the comfortable world that we will live in would soon fall apart without the protection of our own species as well as the species and environments that we interact with.
