Russian History on Dipity.
Russia's history is anything but light. Russia has also had quite a tumultuous past. There are, however, key events that have shaped it into the country that it now stands as. The first major event was in 1547 when Ivan the IV (also known as Ivan the Terrible) became the first czar. This monarchy would reflect the government of Russia for almost the next 350 years! Ivan is accredited to expanding the vast land that Russia would become, including Siberia. Jump forward in history to 1917, when the monarchy was overthrown by the Bolsheviks, a communist group. This act started the Russian Revolution and the beginnings of Russia's involvement in communistic government. Despite their opposition from the democratic countries of the world, they were a key player in aiding the Allied powers of WWII. The Russian army took the city of Berlin, which ended Hitler's Third Reich, and finally ended the second World War. Russia's action was heroic, and they showed their dominance on the global scale. Although they were necessary to Germany's defeat, the country was still under speculation because of their dictator, Joseph Stalin, and communist government. This opposition and fear of communist influence would become known as the Cold War- it was a non-physical war between the former Soviet Union and the the democratic countries of the world, including the United States. To add to the Cold War, a space race began in 1957 when the Soviets launched the first artificial satellite into space. The satellite was named Sputnik. Russia and the United States dueled in becoming the major influence of global power. The Soviet Union eventually collapsed in 1990, making 15 new independent nations. Although the collapse was difficult to come back from, the newly democratic Russian Federation has prospered and come back as a global power and key producer of resources.
